Bangladeshi documentary ‘Latika’ is going to Moscow

The Bangladeshi short documentary ‘Latika’ has wowed audiences at prestigious film festivals around the world from Switzerland to England to Russia. With screenings at the 55th Visions du Real International Film Festival, the 23rd WOW-Wales One World Film Festival, and the DV Film Festival, ‘Latika’ is gaining international recognition for its unique and powerful storytelling, and compelling visuals. Now, it’s set to captivate audiences at the Moscow Film Festival in Russia.
The movie is crafted by the talented director and producer Samsul Islam Swapan. The producer officially announced in a press release that his film had been chosen for the short competition category of the Moscow International Documentary Film Festival. The anticipation is high as the festival is set to kick off on September 5 and run until September 15. ‘Latika’ is scheduled for a screening on the evening of September 8, and we can’t wait to see the audience’s reaction.
Besides Bangladesh, films from Brazil, Chile, China, France, Georgia, Iran, Italy, Kurdistan, Moldova, Netherlands, Pakistan, Russia, Spain, Syria, and the UAE will compete in the festival.
The documentary was shown at London’s DV Film Festival last July and received critical acclaim. Recently, Swapan was excited to receive a call from Moscow. He said, “Films from over 15 countries will compete in this film festival. My film has also been selected, and I am thrilled.”
British Council funded this captivating short documentary that delves into the life of Latika, a remarkable woman residing in the Malo community along the picturesque banks of the Chitra River in Narail district. The documentary showcases the extraordinary story of Latika and her family, shedding light on the daily life of her husband, Shyam Biswas. Shyam is a fisherman who skilfully employs otters to aid him in his fishing endeavours. The film offers an intimate glimpse into their family dynamics, portraying the endearing interactions between Latika, Shyam Biswas, their two children, and the remarkable three pairs of otters that are integral to their lives.
