Nearly 48 hours after being fired from OpenAI, Sam Altman has been hired by Microsoft in order to lead a “new advanced AI research team”. The news was posted on X (formerly Twitter) by Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella. Altman responded to the post writing “the mission continues”.

Sam Altman helped launch OpenAI and was instrumental in the creation of the popular ChatGPT bot. His contributions in the growing artificial intelligence space have cemented him as one of its most influential figures.

OpenAI’s new interim CEO Emmett Shear stated that the sacking of Altman was “handled very badly” and “seriously damaged our trust”. Shear claims that the board did not fire Altman over any specific disagreement and that he would hire an independent investigator to look into the matter.

While his chaotic ousting reflected poorly on OpenAI’s board and has put $86 billion share sale in jeopardy, Microsoft took the opportunity to strengthen themselves by hiring one of the world’s leading experts on AI.
