Qatar PM Demands Investigation into Israeli Crimes

Qatar’s prime minister has called for an “immediate, comprehensive and impartial international investigation” into Israeli war crimes in Gaza.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani told Al Jazeera on Sunday that Qatar would continue its efforts towards establishing another truce and reaching a permanent ceasefire in the war torn region.

Since the end of the week-long truce on Friday, Israel has intensified its attacks on Gaza, with a government media official telling Al Jazeera that 700 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks during the last 24 hours.

The chief prosecutor for the International Criminal Court (ICC), Karim Khan, said his office will ramp up investigations into potential war crimes. “All actors must comply with international humanitarian law. If you do not do so, do not complain when my office is required to act,” Khan said on Sunday at the end of his four-day visit to Israel and the occupied West Bank.

The ICC was formed in 2002 to probe international crimes such as genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity. It opened an investigation in 2021 into Israel and Hamas for possible war crimes in the Palestinian territories.

Israel, which is not a member of the ICC, has rejected the court’s jurisdiction and does not formally engage with it.
