Money isn’t the main key in Art -Shahabuddin Ahmed

Shahabuddin Ahmed is a world famous Bengali painter. The liberation war of Bangladesh, independence movement and victory have become alive with the touch of his paintbrush. The expression of the indominatable strength and unstoppable speed of the struggling man in his pictures is famous around the world. The art of this digital artist is widely honoured in Europe. He got the highest civilian honor ‘Knight’ of France. As one of the fifty Master Painters of Contemporary Arts, he was awared Olympiad of Arts in Barcelona in 1992. He got Bangladesh’s highest honor ‘Independence Medal’.

How do you see the art practice of Bangladesh? In response to this type of questions, he said that painting or literature is a medium of creativity where time is needed. As the journalists write news and daily events in newspaper, what is happening is captured in it. But painting or literature needs time to do. I want it suddenly and it becomes, that’s not like it. As a result, there is no patience for many of them. Many problems are seen. Many things need to do in order to live. Many will become extinct. Now the paintings that are practising in Bangladesh is also a matter of time. Time should be given. There are many problems in Bangladesh, especially in politics and economy. Different types of effects have fallen here. Though there are many effects in such type of sectors, but there is little effects on paintings. It is wonderful. But the main key to painting is ‘individuality’. Individuality is the power of painting. It has in our paintings.

This artist talks about painting, many things change over time. Time is need to given for this too. Such as literature, cinema, music of Bangladesh are same. I am talking to painting as I am an artist, not like that. Painting lags behind where there is much toubles in the world. But in Bangladesh, it got earlier. Do Joynul Abedin,Kamrul Hasan,Sultan become over night? They painted pictures all over their life. So here generation is come to a topic. They might paint pictures about 20 years or 10 years. In paintings,this time is nothing. We say, like, Michael Jackson died at an early age. This type of people is quite a different entity. It can’t be judged by this. Joynal Abedin, he is different. When he became the Joynul Abedin, couldn’t be so. But he had intelligence, concentration. Like that, how Bangabandhu became the Bangabandhu? There were many wise politicians in that time. But there is only one Bangabandhu from the people’s polices. Some events became factors here. Again if we say, is the Rebel poet Kazi Nazrul Islam be a Nazrul? No. These give sign before that nature has a power. Golden Bangla doesn’t become Golden Bangla in one-day. It has historical amd natural issues. Nature has a power. Here paddies or onions do not grow in one-day. Painting is the same. Joynul Abedin, Kazi Nazrul Islam Rabindranath or Bangabandhu,whose you talk about,there were hard work, worship and intelligence behind them and our art-literature,politics has alive for them. We became famous around the world. If they weren’t there,we would lagged behind for around one hundred to two hundred years.

Shahabuddin told about the artists of this generation, the young generation is coming forward. But there was no saying about this. If you think of other countries, that is a different matter. But ours is a small country. After 4 and a half years of independence, a crack is seen in a country, the crack that split all the achievements of the liberation war. There was a big stone, that stone is broker into pieces. Ome should not think of painting or literature after this type of dangerous event. Still we think. Because painting, literature and music are at our core. This is the nature of our Bengalis. Many have become mad to waste it but can’t.

Who are they? Our art-culture, especially in the sector of cinema, has been seen that it has taken turn in the direction of external political maneuvers. It has gone to America’s Hollywood or India’s Bollywood. The Bengali language and Bengaliness have moved away by this from the media. But many timeworn films have been made in Bengal. Making a cinema is very difficult task. You can’t become a film director as you like. Here the director has to understand his work, the audience have to understand. He must have creative thinking and dreams of building something new. You must understand the technology.
