Water Price Increased by 10 Percent: Dhaka WASA

Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (WASA) has decided to increase the price of water by an additional 10 percent starting from July. Pursuant to Section 22 of the WASA Act 1996, in order to balance inflation, from July 1 of the current year, the price of water will be adjusted by 10 percent for residential and commercial connections. Yesterday, Wednesday, Dhaka WASA published a public notice.

For residential customers, the price of 1000 liters of water has been set at Tk 16.70, up from Tk 15.18. On the other hand, for commercial customers, the new price for this quantity of water has been set at Tk 46.20, up from Tk 42.20. It is being prominently informed in the notice that in accordance with Section 22 of the WASA Act 1996, the decision to increase the price of water has been taken to balance inflation.

It has been informed in the notice that this decision will be effective for all types of assessments (water and sewerage), including meterless holdings, deep tube wells, under-construction buildings, and minimum bills. Earlier, in July 2022, the price of water was increased by five percent by Dhaka WASA. The new rates became effective from September 1. Before that, in 2017, the price of water in the residential category was increased by five percent, from Tk 10 to Tk 10.50, and in the commercial category, it was increased from Tk 32 to Tk 33.60. Subsequently, in 2018 and 2019, the water and sewerage service bills were increased annually by five percent. From April 1, 2020, the price for residential connections was increased by 25 percent, from Tk 11.57 to Tk 14.46, and for commercial connections, it was increased by eight percent, from Tk 37.04 to Tk 40.
