Renowned Bangladeshi Artist Zainul Abedin's Works Achieve Record Prices at Sotheby's Auction

Two paintings by renowned Bangladeshi artist Zainul Abedin achieved record-breaking prices at a recent Sotheby’s auction titled “Modern and Contemporary South Asian Art” held in New York.
The star of the auction was “Santal Couples,” a 1963 oil painting depicting a rural couple in traditional attire, which sold for USD 381,000. This masterpiece, previously owned by the Marker family, close friends of Abedin, carries profound symbolic depth
Another significant Abedin work, an oil painting featuring a weary woman in a blue saree, also fetched an impressive USD 279,400. Painted between 1956 and 1963, this piece belonged to the same Marker family collection.
While the identities of the buyers remain undisclosed, art experts see these sales as a powerful validation of Abedin’s enduring legacy. His captivating works continue to garner international attention and record-breaking prices, securing his place among the greats of art history.
