Utpal Dutt’s Timeless Play "Haarhi Phatibe" Returns to Dhaka's Stage

After a long time, Dhaka’s stage will once again be graced by the timeless play “Haarhi Phatibe,” written by renowned playwright Utpal Dutt. Theater troupe Ethic is set to present this classic in a new format as their debut stage production. Directed by the young and talented Mintu Sardar, with Moni Kanchan as the associate director, the 84th performance of “Haarhi Phatibe” is scheduled for Friday, May 31, 2024, at 7:15 PM at the Studio Theatre Hall of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.

“Haarhi Phatibe” is a thrilling exploration that aims to unveil the grotesque and dark lives of society’s upper echelon. The play promises to captivate the audience with its compelling narrative and powerful performances. This production seeks to shed light on societal issues, making it as relevant today as it was when it was first written.

The cast includes Hasan Rizvi, Bhavna Hasan, Sukorn Hasan, Monirul Haque Jhalak, Moni Kanchan, Rawnak Bishak Shyamoli, Azim Uddin, Nahid, S.P. Khan Shawon, Rubel Khan, Abir Babu, and Mintu Sardar. The play’s production team features Tandu Raihan on lighting design, Anis Ananda in charge of stage and costume design, Shubhashish Dutta Tanmoy as the makeup artist, and Pathik Palash responsible for the cover design. Lighting projection will be managed by Sujon Shamim, and music projection by Sharifa Jahan Ruma.

In addition to the main performances, there will be a special panel discussion on the importance of theater in contemporary society.
